Tech the Night Away - Pint of Science 2026

Samet is speaking at this year's Pint of Science festival as part of Tech the Night Away, an evening of accessible talks about technologies making a real difference to people's lives.
Samet's talk, "How Much Insulin Are You Making?", explores a question that matters enormously for nearly half a million people in the UK living with type 1 diabetes. The immune system can silently destroy insulin-producing cells for years before diagnosis, and measuring a key molecule called C-peptide could transform how we catch, monitor, and personalise treatment for the disease. The problem? Current tests are slow, expensive, and confined to specialist labs.
Our group at Lancaster is developing rapid biosensor devices that can answer the question in minutes, at a GP surgery, a clinic, or a bedside. No lab required.
Pint of Science is an international public engagement festival bringing researchers into local venues to talk science over a drink.
