Our research Dr Sam Rust recently represented the Şahin Group at the Materials Research Exchange 2026 held at the Business Design Centre in London. This annual flagship event showcases advanced materials research from the UK, hosted by UKRI, sponsored by the Henry Royce Institute and supported by EPSRC.
The event offered a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements and innovations emerging from both academia and industry, including developments in advanced composites, biomaterials, sustainable materials and energy storage.
A diverse range of speakers and exhibitors were present, including an opening address by Lord Patrick Vallance, Minister for Science, Research and Innovation. He set out the UK government’s vision in placing advanced materials at the heart of the national future industrial strategy.
Sir John Lazar, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering gave a keynote on turning deep tech research into real-world impact which was particularly insightful and aligns with our group aims. A workshop by DSTL emphasised their dual-use approach to materials research and innovation, outlining the vast array of areas they work in. This was of particular interest as Sam has previously worked on a DSTL funded biosensor project.
An afternoon session on the emerging area of metamaterials was also thought-provoking. This class of artificial composite structures are engineered to have properties not found in naturally occurring materials and may be important in the next generation of biosensors.
Finally, the opportunity to catchup with old colleagues was invaluable. Brunel University London were exhibiting which is where Sam completed his PhD. This gave an opportunity to share stories, discuss our ongoing projects and even reminisce over a drink once the hard work was done!
